· The Effectiveness of a Medicine Bottle to Protect its Contents from UV Radiation
Small plastic beads designed to change color when hit by UV radiation were placed inside a medicine bottle. A video camera was placed inside the bottle and recorded the beads during the flight. UV radiation levels increase with altitude since there is less air to absorb or block the rays. After looking at the video, the students observed that the beads did not change color. The medicine bottle blocked the UV radiation under the extreme conditions at high altitudes. Medicine bottles like the one used in the experiment really do protect their contents from UV radiation.
Beads exposed to direct sunlight turn dark purple.
Beads inside the bottle remain clear at all altitudes.
